# Pickleball rally scoring vs side-out scoring

In rally scoring, whoever wins the rally scores a point, serving or not. USA Pickleball’s 2026 rulebook keeps it as a provisional option (Rule 14.A): the score is called as two numbers, each team has one server per side out, and games go to 11, 15 or 21, won by two. Side-out scoring, where only the serving team scores, is still the standard. Replay a game below to see the same rallies scored both ways.

## The rally-scoring rules in 2026

Section 14.A of the 2026 USA Pickleball Official Rulebook changes four things about a standard game, and the 2026 edition settled a fifth. Everything else, from the kitchen to the two-bounce rule, stays the same (Rule 14.A.1).

- **A point every rally.** The singles player or doubles team that wins the rally scores, whether it served or received (Rule 14.A.2).
- **Two-number calls.** The server calls their own score, then the receiver’s, even in doubles (Rule 14.A.3). No server number, and no 0-0-2.
- **One server per side out.** When the serving team loses a rally, the opponents score and take the serve; there is no second server (Rule 14.A.5).
- **Who serves after a side out.** The player standing on the right according to the team’s new score (Rule 14.A.4). Positions still follow Rule 5.B.3: a team’s starting server is on the right when the team’s score is even and on the left when it is odd. A team that wins a rally on receive has a new score, so it lines up for that score, and the player then on the right serves.
- **No freeze at game point.** Under the 2025 provisional rule, the receiving side could not win the game’s last point. For 2026 USA Pickleball dropped that exception: the receiving team can now win the rally, and with it the game, on game point (Change Document, entry 20).

Facing the net from the left end, a team’s right is the bottom of each drawing. S is the team’s starting server, P the partner.

## Where rally scoring is allowed

In sanctioned tournaments the tournament director chooses. Rule 15.C.2 lets them use rally scoring for one game, or best of three or five games, to 11, 15 or 21, except in double-elimination doubles events, all 2026 USA Pickleball Golden Ticket events and the 2026 USA Pickleball National Championship events. Team play may use either scoring method for singles and doubles (Rule 15.B.7), and in bad weather a director may shorten a single game or tie-breaker game to 7 points, with an end change at 4 (Rule 15.C.2.d).

For club and park play there is nothing to sanction: agree on the system before the first serve. As of 5 November 2026 the format is still provisional, and USA Pickleball says it will decide in 2027 whether to extend the trial, make the format permanent or stop using it in sanctioned tournaments.

## Side-out or rally: what changes on court

| | Side-out (standard) | Rally (provisional) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Who scores | Serving team only (4.A) | Winner of every rally (14.A.2) |
| Doubles call | Three numbers, starts 0-0-2 (6.B.2) | Two numbers, starts 0-0 (14.A.3) |
| Servers per turn | Two, except the first turn of a game (5.B) | One (14.A.5) |
| Game point when receiving | Can’t score | Can win the game (2026 change) |
| Tournament games | 11, 15 or 21, win by 2 (15.C.1) | 11, 15 or 21, win by 2 (15.C.2) |

## One sample game, two results

The simulator above starts with a fixed sample of 45 rallies, Team A winning 21 of them and Team B 24. Scored side-out to 11, Team B wins 11-9, and the game takes all 45 rallies and 13 side outs. Scored rally style to 15, the same rallies give Team A a 15-11 win after only 26; to 21, Team B wins 23-21 after 44 rallies.

The winners differ because side-out scoring only counts rallies won on serve. In the sample, Team A won plenty of rallies while receiving, which earned it the serve but not points; rally scoring credits every one of them. That is the core trade-off: rally scoring makes every rally matter and makes game length predictable, while side-out scoring rewards holding serve and lets a trailing team come back without the leader scoring.

The simulator holds the rallies fixed so you can see the scoring alone. In a real game, who serves changes who wins rallies, so treat the result as an illustration, not a forecast. Make a few random games and see how often the two systems pick different winners.

## Common rally-scoring mistakes

- **Calling three numbers.** Out of habit people add “two” at the start. Rally scoring has no server number.
- **Giving the partner a turn.** One lost rally on serve is a side out.
- **Freezing at game point.** That was the 2025 rule. In 2026 the receivers can win on game point.
- **Staying put after winning on receive.** Your score just changed, so line up for it before you serve.
- **Assuming every event allows it.** Check the tournament’s format; the exceptions above still apply in 2026.

## Questions

**Is rally scoring official in pickleball?**

It is a provisional rule in the 2026 USA Pickleball Official Rulebook (Rules 14.A and 15.C.2), not the standard. Side-out scoring remains the default, and USA Pickleball plans to decide in 2027 whether to keep, extend or drop the provisional format.

**How do you call the score in rally scoring?**

With two numbers: the server’s score, then the receiver’s, in singles and doubles alike (Rule 14.A.3). A game starts at 0-0, because there is no second server.

**Can the receiving team score in pickleball?**

Not in side-out scoring, where only the serving team scores (Rule 4.A). In rally scoring the receiving team scores whenever it wins the rally, and it takes the serve as well (Rule 14.A).

**Is there still a freeze at game point in rally scoring?**

No. The 2025 provisional rule only let the serving side win the game’s last point. USA Pickleball removed that exception for 2026, so a receiving team on game point wins the game by winning the rally.

**What score do rally-scoring games go to?**

USA Pickleball’s tournament options are 11, 15 or 21 points, as one game or best of three or five, always won by two (Rule 15.C.2). Many groups pick 15 or 21 because a rally game to 11 is over quickly.
